Pancho Villa
José Doroteo Arango Arámbula, or Pancho
Villa, is known as the Robin Hood of the 19th century. Supporting
his mother and four siblings after his father’s death, he had come
to learn in 1894 that the owner of the hacienda had raped his 12
year old sister. At the age of 16, raged with anger he took matters
into his own hands, grabbed a firearm, and shot the owner, leaving
him to die in his own puddle of blood. Young and scared he fled from
the law and lived in the mountains from 1894 to 1910. During this
time he met up with a group of bandits and soon became their leader.
As a group they committed crimes against the wealthy, stole cattle,
and shipments of money and gave it to the poor. Pancho Villa was
killed on Friday, July 20, 1923. He was assassinated in an ambush by
a group of 17 riflemen. It is reported that his last words were,
“Don't let it end like this. Tell them I said something.”
