Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson
was the Third President of the United States and Author of the
Declaration of Independence. Jefferson also founded the University
of Virginia. He served his country for five decades as a public
official, historian, philosopher, and plantation owner. He learned
his traits from his father, Peter Jefferson, which was also a
surveyor. After his father’s death, Jefferson inherited a large
amount of land that led to the start of the Monticello. A few years
after completing the Monticello, Jefferson married Martha Wayles
Skelton. Martha and Thomas brought six wonderful children into the
world. Only two children lived to adulthood. Jefferson lost almost
everything. He lived at the Monticello for the remainder of his
life. In 1776, he was chosen to write the draft for the Declaration
of Independence, which proposed that all men were created equal
regardless of race, wealth or social status. Jefferson is
remembered for many inspiring quotes such as, “The government is the
servant, not the master, of the people.”
