General Sam Houston
On April 21, 1836, Sam Houston and his army
of Texans started to make their way to the Buffalo Bayou in San
Jacinto, to prepare for the battle against Mexican General Antonio
Lopez de Santa Anna and his army of about 1000 men. On the morning
of April 20th, as Sam Houston’s army was preparing for the next day,
they received two artillery cannons nicknamed the “Twin-Sisters”,
from the citizens of Cincinnati, Ohio. As the sun rose over the tree
line and bayou, the Texans knew it was time for battle. While Santa
Anna and his army started to march towards the battlefield, Sam
Houston sent Deaf Smith, a Texan spy, and three men to destroy the
one and only bridge that was the only escape route for Santa Anna.
His soldiers eagerly awaited Houston’s orders. With the orders to
“fire”, the Texans were not hesitant; they charged the battle field
yelling, “Remember the Alamo” and “Remember Goliad”, as a tribute to
their fallen brothers. In about 20 minutes, the Texans killed 700
Mexicans and took 730 captive. Santa Anna was defeated; Texas was
born.
