General Robert E. Lee
The famous Confederate General, Robert
E. Lee, had seen what the horrors of war brought to men. One of his
most frightening conflicts was at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Lee
and his army were situated on a hill now known as “Lee’s Hill.” With
the command to fire, the violence began. A Rebel artillerist named
Edward Alexander stated that, “A chicken could not live on the field
when we opened on it.” The artillery was overwhelming in the battle.
The sacrifice and bravery of both Union and Confederate soldiers
will never be forgotten. As Lee watched his men cutting apart line
after line of advancing Union troops he stated, “It is well that war
is so terrible, or we should grow too fond of it.”
