Clara Barton
Clara Barton was the youngest of five
children and a very intelligent woman. She was homeschooled until
the age of 15 and started teaching when she was only 17 years old.
At the young age of 23, Barton started her own public school with
more than 600 students in attendance. A few years later, Clara
Barton decided to change her career path; she began working in the
U.S. Patent Office as a clerk. Soon after, the Civil War started.
Barton quit her job and began treating injured soldiers. Initially,
women weren’t allowed in military hospitals or camps, but Barton
would not take “no” for an answer. She insisted on nursing
soldiers back to health. Eventually, Clara Barton was allowed to
help, and started receiving medical supplies from all over the
country. Clara Barton was considered one of the best nurses of all
time. After the Civil War, Barton took it upon herself to start what
is now known as the American Red Cross. Clara Barton’s perseverance
and determination are an inspiration to women all around the world.
